Walker and Bromwich

Celestial Radio
Zoë Walker and Neil Bromwich’s work crosses between the gallery space and the public realm. They use public performance, installation and sculpture as tools through witch they invite the audience to protest and dream, employing a playful aesthetic that explores ideas around some of life’s big questions, like the pursuit of happiness and the nature of belief.
Celestial Radio is Walker and Bromwich’s most ambitious work to date shifting from the metaphorical to the actual and back again. This work combines glamour, ocean exploration and the maverick equines of pirate radio. Their boat, the Celeste, travels literally across the high seas while conceptually exploring the metaphorical oceans of life’s big questions both cosmic and microscopic.

Celestial Radio is a seductive sculptural object as well as a radio station, a sailing boat whose surface is covered by 60, 0000 inch square mirror tiles; she splinters daylight as if transmitting Morse code messages. Each time the Celeste anchors off shore in a new location the artists devise a site specific broadcast that reflects the location, concentrating on what can be learnt from each place, unearthing what remains hidden in the places their visit. The artists often invite local people to contribute to the programming, either through interviews or in devising the broadcasts.

Celestial Radio will be part of the 2nd Thessaloniki Biennale in response to the conceptual framework of the Biennale, PRAXIS: Art in the Times of Uncertainty for which the artists devised a new program.

Celestial Thessaloniki
Celestial Radio in Thessaloniki is a commissioned radio program exploring some of the following key issues:
- Pirate Radio history in Thessaloniki
- A city at a cross road of cultures and religion
- The hidden history of the Zealots of Thessaloniki: around 1340, this religious group took over power in the city at the heart of an anti-aristocratic shift in politics and formed the first recorded commune:  the Commune of the Zealots. This historical event will be the point of departure for an exploration of contemporary communes in the city and will provide a link with recent resistance movements such as the 2008 riots in Greece.
