| Pinto Mauro Born in 1974 in Maputo, Mozambique. Lives and works in Mozambique. Ports of Convergence: Angola and the departure of an African Legacy The Luanda Port experience is but a beginning, an initiation of sorts, that aims to exhibit glimpses and touches of Africa’s legacy brought to other continents of the world. This exhibition is but one component of an ambitious project which aims to investigate how Southern Africa’s cultures have shaped a continental triangle of Africa-America-Europe through history and through the visual means of photographing cities, towns and villages by the sea. The main focus is set on ports: historically ports were the main points of movement for African migrations with its crude and massive beginnings with the slavery trade. In order to fully comprehend the magnitude of an African Legacy in foreign lands, it is necessary to go back to the historical points of departure and entry of African populations: maritime ports. Furthermore, the photographer wishes to establish a link between Africa and African populations that have migrated voluntarily or forcefully to foreign continents, such as Europe and America, and to see through his eyes the environment in which people from Southern Africa had arrived to, many years ago. His true aim is to travel the footsteps of his own to foreign lands, many years later, and to register the journey in order to shake the present of its marginalization of Africa and of its people living in foreign continents. His most, well kept, secret wish is for all people, from Africa and afar, to feel the tension and warmth of Africa’s ancestors and for all to acknowledge the reality of his continent’s people wherever they may be. Mauro Pinto, through challenging and artistically inspired settings near the Port of Angola’s Capital City, blends the delicate art of photographic contrast and captures the essence of reality of place and people surrounded by sea and ships.
