| Martinez Cesar Born in 1962 in Mexico. Lives and works in Mexico and Madrid. The breath of life The works of the Mexican artist César Martínez alert the viewer’s five senses: they have taste and smell. His shapes and materials could have only been gestated in Latin America. His endeavour releases social commitment, linking the work to the avant-garde principle of “art is life”. This Mexican artist has been developing his work since the 80’s, first in his country and in neighbouring USA, Dominican Republic, Colombia or Brazil, to then jump to Europe where he had a number of solo and group exhibitions in Germany, Spain, Italy, Belgium, Hungary, United Kingdom, Poland and Czech Republic. His production has been characterized by originality both in the use of materials and in the chosen means of expression: gelatine and chocolate men, works made of gun powder which have to be blown up to exist, or latex human figures that breathe. The characteristic behind all of them is the interest of the artist to involve the audience in his works: his pieces are to be smelt, eaten and felt. Who would not recognize himself in those figures that inflate and deflate in the act of breathing? After all, we need air to exist like they do. Referring on this matter, the artist says: “air is of such importance as the material that holds life, and as that breathe of wind that at the same time reduces and expands us”. These human figures that breathe are metaphors of life, but they also carry an alarming message: like the air supports the human being, it is oil that supports his economic interest, a substance which contaminates men, air and life.
