| Marquespenteado Fernando Born in 1955 in Sao Paolo. Lives and works in Brazil. I consider that throughout my art practice trajectory I dealt mostly with drawings and collages, both mediums substantially enhanced by the use of stitches via machine and hand embroidery. In the last years, I have explored compact plastic fabrics, meshes and synthetically compressed surfaces on the top of which I have embroidered, using mostly linen threads and hardware shops paraphernalia to do the job. I use almost exclusively a single stitch -the backstitch- for either covering surfaces or couching other materials, always within a very crude aesthetics. I tend to move from one series of artwork to another where I can contrast themes and palettes: I have been more and more attracted to large scale pieces of work and I have created a few installations. My inspiration has been floating around visual regimes within urban material cultures -something like extensively deployed public imagery that inhibits and fatigues one¢s primary instinct to produce meanings- together with my on going interest on male to male daily practices of violence, particularly through images and events where human life is taken without grace. My interest in these arenas grew, moved by an installed marriage which has been taken place between civil acrimony and public escapism within Brazilian society, a combination that always puzzled me, topped up with my estrangement and uneasiness around the event of (several) beheadings within the prison system throughout the country, due to gang rivalry scenarios fuelled by drugs. I am presently interested in the realms of textiles and performances: I am looking at the operation of magical tricks and studying a french theatrical genre where terror and mutilation were overtly staged. In the near future, I intend to research artists¢ ethics whereas producing and commenting brutal aspects of society in their work, and to focus even closer in works of art that purport public estrangement and disgust, works that generate public rage and the eventual mutilation or destruction of these art pieces. Meanwhile, I try to respond to the plural drives of my practice and to strengthen both my joggling-between-two-continents-existence and my fragile civil sanity. F.
