| Manchot Melanie Born in 1966 in Witten, Germany. Lives and works in London. The Dream Collector (Mexico City), 2008 The Dream Collector is an installation comprising of a five channel video work and a series of small panel paintings. The project continues Manchot’s on-going investigation into the nature and limits of portraiture and extends her particular approach towards a performative practice. It further develops her interest in public space and investigates how these locations may be appropriated by individuals and temporarily become private. The work sets out to collect dreams from people, random citizens, who happen to be temporarily and voluntarily asleep in public locations across the city -Mexico City. The central component of The Dream Collector consists of a video installation presented as five monitors displaying synchronised video and sound sequences of people sleeping and telling their dreams to camera. To make The Dream Collector, Manchot filmed people who she found asleep outdoors, recording the entire duration of their sleep, from ten minutes to two hours. Upon waking, the people were asked whether they could recollect any dreams from this very moment of sleep and if so were invited to narrate the dream to camera. In recording these dream narratives, Manchot works with her on-going interest in the translation of private experience into language. To expand on the idea of translation, Manchot commissioned a Mexican ex-voto painter to make a series of traditional ex-voto panels, one about each dream, hence re-translating the narratives into visual representations.
