| Loizidou Maria Born in 1958 in Limassol, Cyprus. Lives and works in Nicosia. Maria Lozidou participates in the 2nd Biennale of Thessaloniki with two works: Dentellière and Eucalyptus, especially designed for the places they are to be displayed, namely the port Warehouse C and the atrium of the Museum of Byzantine Culture, respectively. At the port, one anticipates a paper female figure, enclosed in an old, glass showcase –set up as a museum exhibit. She appears to be rigorously intended to her embroidery, which is unified with her body to become its physical extension. Austere, fragile and monumental, her image is being compiled in the viewer’s eyes through the successive glass layers which function as supporting and at the same time slicing surfaces. It could be read as an allegory of the apparent self-sufficiency of the work of art, which decisively depends on the technological self-sufficiency of both the era and its people as well. The outdoor installation at the Museum of Byzantine Culture actually converses with her previous works at Our Lady of Fátima in Portugal, where she produced a “flying symphony of angels” organically implemented in the monument made by Alexandros Tompazis, and the installation living small presented at the atrium of the Benaki Museum. The perforated metallic grid has been applicably set up so as to be viewed upwards and allow the unhindered passing of the visitors as well. It is not a work in rivalry with its surroundings; but rather it imperceptibly intrudes its symbolism, leaving almost unfading traces despite its passing intentions. It is a work of art susceptible to the observer’s interpretation, mainly because it activates personal mnemonic processes. Maria Loizidou’s work systematically deals with issues concerning the historical evolution of artistic concepts, such as the relationship between popular and contemporary artistic expression, the role of the artist as a craftsman, the collective manual work and the engendered dimension of the work of art. By developing a firm code of expressions, she proceeds to the replenishment of their content. The light, as well as its effect on the transformation of objects, constitutes a fundamental feature of her concepts. The implementation of her art installations in space is the product of thorough research of both the architecture of the building that accommodates her works and the visitor’s-viewer’s presence in the structured surroundings.
