| Divaris Giorgos Born in 1956 in Sao Paolo, Brazil. Lives and works in Athens and Thessaloniki. George Divaris’s installation consists of a metallic table on the surface of which a street fighting scene has been imprinted, depicted from an encounter between police forces and demonstrators; a perforated piece of cloth is hanged behind the table having a bombing target imprinted, while the floor reminds us of the ground plan of a house. This work constitutes part of a series of proposals recently presented by the artist concerning the issues of manipulation and representation of the televised information as well as the control exercised by the authorities concerning the construction of the news and the way in which it is consumed within the allegedly safe home environment. The notion of arrogance, with its dual meaning of “watching from above” and “deliberate distance keeping from what is happening”, constitutes the main idea of the work, while at the same time determines the way materials are used and incorporated in a new, staged reality. The linking between the familiar and the unfamiliar lends a special touch to Divaris’s work: despite the fact that each individual feature of the project is being immediately apprehended, the way the artist handles and organizes them perturbs the viewer, causing some concern which is not based only on the content of the images, but mainly on the precarious balance of the whole setting. According to Roland Barthes, the accumulation of realistic details supports the “impression of reality”. As Divaris’s work evolves, a critical rhetoric matures concerning the plausibility of the visual experience. It is an allusive rhetoric made with the very same tools of the technological civilization, which is questioned by the artistic piece.
