Darsi Hassan

Born in 1961 in Casablanca. Lives and works in Morocco.

An implementation of surface…
For 10 years, Hassan Darsi's work has started moving away from the application of golden adhesive and evolved providing rhythm to the various stages and changes of his course as an artist. His early applications of “golden coat” -simply questioning the reflection of the whitewashed coat of Spain, attempting all possible interventions by the visitor- to objects mummified in the golden adhesive, constitute a whole world of perceptions and shifts, which developed and questioned by the artist. Thus, by simple covering them in a golden coat, he creates usual objects, abandoned in the restrictions of our everyday life, “totems” of banality. Reinvested, “re-designed” by means of the golden adhesive, the object invents in itself a new existence, plays with the pretence offered by “the gold” of its surface and scrambles our ordinary visual references. A simple doll recovered from a dustbin in Beirut, becomes then a creature both worrying and attractive… Hassan Darsi overbalances the universal mechanisms which inevitably generates the colour of gold, while at the same time he questions our attitude, that we have and that do not have any more on the issues of life. This is what the artist’s work refers to when he shifts reality on a model scale; when he juxtaposes anonymous portraits along a wall of the railway; when he covers in a golden coat the façade of a building… An exercise or destruction of the surface; a disappearance or appearance… This is what is presented in Darsi's “superpositions” which function by means of golden coating, photography, text writing, sound or the combination of all these “devices” which shift art where it is least anticipated.
