| BeforeLight The group beforelight consists of 10 members who are students and post-graduate students of the departments of drama and architecture of the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki. Members of the group are: Eliza Alexandropoulou, Dimitra Aloutzanidou, Cristina Ampatzidou, Konstantina Evangelou, Kelly Efraimidou, Dimitris Theoharoudis, Danae Krustallidou, Maria Lazaridou, Vasilis Ntovros and Eirini Steirou. Being primarily inspired by natural light and its observance, as well as a respect to darkness, the beforelight group discovers light as a form of matter and energy; thus experimenting with its qualities as an element of space, as a narrative means and as an artistic item. Dealing with all aspects of lighting art –from theatre lighting design to lighting interventions in architectural sites– beforelight gradually get to know and try out new technologies, mixed media and their applications, aiming at artistic creation. Establishing that the physical experience, both individual and at the same time collective, concerning a work of art causes a much deeper impression than an intellectual one, we go on and attempt to create a vivid environment responding to the visitor-viewer's every sense. Taking under consideration the intellectual background of Biennale #2, we end up in the concept that art should not remain sterilized within a museum, but rather step out in the streets, interact with the human constructions and the urban environment, become part of real life. The development of the cultural theory and its occasionally revolutionary rhetoric, do not seem adequate to exercise political power, in its broader sense. Considering that art can bring about radical changes might actually seem like the overtone of utopian revolutionary theories of the past; yet, an artistic creation that can comment, interact with the events and constitute part of contemporary human life is more necessary than ever. The formation of this group aimed at creation in general and at an attempt to communicate and express all the ideas and notions discovered during our gradual acquaintance with light as an artistic item.
